If it's a real problem, try the "ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure" approach. Do an estimate
that shows 10 minutes of attention to writing by the
engineers saves an entire afternoon of your time. And
include in that estimate the amount of engineers' time
that could be saved by not having to interrrupt them
to ask what they really mean. The boss will be a lot
more receptive if you make it a matter of saving the
company money, rather than making it a matter of your
individual stress level.

When is it not a real problem? When you're not having
trouble meeting deadlines or when you don't have to do
lots of overtime because of this. If you're still able
to get your work done on time, I'd say just try to
relax.

In any case, try to spend more time conferring with
the engineers, and show them the kinds of problems you
have in figuring out their meanings. The ones who are
really perceptive will figure out on their own that
they can make things easier all around by paying more
attention to what they write. Maybe some others will
pick it up with a little prompting.
