I think you make a valid point.

When something like 80% of all PCs are running variants of MS
Office, we'd be crazy to not develop some skill with the
constituent applications.

Even though conversion tools abound, there is a definite
advantage to using the tools the companies/customers/clients we
work with use.

I don't think Microsoft has got the stranglehold on the market
they have by making a better product. I have worked with
applications that were, IMO, much better than the comparable MS
product. MS got the stranglehold through marketing savvy.
