It's a prediction - It's based on deduction, from my knowledge of that SW
market. You are welcome to believe that vendors will provide activation in
perpetuity, but I think that the arguments for that position would be even

Yeah, but a '49 Hudson still runs if you support it yourself, and lots of
people still do. It's not like Hudson Motor Company came and sugared all the
gas tanks in '53 (which is the equivalent to withholding activation codes).

Nobody expects perpetual support. Products are EOL'ed every day; I'm using a
few of them right now. But there is a difference between ending support, and
disabling the product altogether.
