Yes, I've done that with gradients sometimes (as Kim described). In the
last couple of years I've been mostly using a subtle drop shadow for the
"this is a piece of the window" clue. Even for whole dialog boxes I'll
usually use the shadow--I find it especially useful to help
differentiate the window/dialog from any callouts and commentary I may
be adding.

In recent versions of Photoshop it's easy to do consistent drop shadows.
And they look spiffy. <g>

I'm a big fan of gilding the lily that way. A lot of people respond to
good document design, whether they realize it or not.
