Try this:

(Laugh) "Oh, please! Have you actually READ something written by an engineer? (Laugh) The whole tech writing profession exists because most engineers are TERRIBLE writers. Especially when writing for a non-engineering audience. Usually, their stuff is over-complicated and so badly organized no one but another engineer could understand it. OK, so they managed to write ONE thesis, but who wants to read that? I mean, do we want something the production people can actually USE or what?"

Ya gotta cut people some slack - they just don't have a clue what we really do. Educating them can be kind of fun. (Not that I haven't been as frustrated myself at times.)
