This wasn't a "simple question":

>Does anyone know approximately (ball park) how many Framemaker users
>there are in the US and perhaps world wide? In a start up where most
>engineers use Word, technical communicators have to present the facts to

First, thoughts were solicited. Don't ask for something if you don't want
it.

Second, there's a difference between

>how many Framemaker users
>there are in the US and perhaps world wide?

and

> how many Framemaker users
>there are in the US and perhaps world wide?...technical communicators
> have to present the facts to
>justify the expenditure for the Adobe doc production suite

Obviously, the purpose was to justify the expenditure, not a "simple
question" asking for a number
and coupled with the ">it if anyone has any thoughts on this.", you get the
responses that you saw.
