You want someone whose blind spots don't overlap those of the rest of the
team.

If the rest of the team is detail-oriented, you need a big-picture editor --
someone who may not notice whether the commas are in the right places, but
insists that the document cover the right topics.

If the rest of the team is big-picture oriented, you need a detail-oriented
editor -- someone who may not notice that the document is off-topic, but
insists that the commas be in the right places.

The last thing you need is to hire an editor who will polish up the team's
strong points and neglect their weaknesses, though no doubt such an editor
would be very popular with the team.
