Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about PDFs. I've decided to learn
as much as I can about how to optimize PDFs for download, and then get
volunteers to run a few tests from home on dial-up. This should give me my cold,
hard facts. Contact me off-list if you have any questions or would like more
info on the subject.

Thanks again!

Subje On PDFs

Hello all! I could use some help:

We're trying to make our user documentation accessible online. Instead of just
posting PDFs on our site, they (you know, THOSE people) started by converting
PDFs to HTML with Magellan. Unfortunately, this conversion tool just doesn't fit
our needs and the process has become really tedious and time consuming. When I
asked why we couldn't just post PDFs I was given only one, overriding reason:
most of our customers are on 56k lines (some of them even share 56k between
computers) so they assumed PDFs would be too slow to download.

Does anyone know where I can get some cold hard facts about PDF download times?
I've tried googling, and PDF sites like PDFZone and the archives but I can't
seem to find actual statistics. I know from experience that PDFs offer many
advantages in this situation but it's going to take more than my experience to
convince the powers that be. Any help you can provide will be GREATLY
appreciated.

Thanks!
Rhina
