A lot of popular science writers try to lighten up their topics with
humor, usually centered on anthropomorhic analogies to human
behavior... I guess if I was writing about the migratory habits of
snails, I could work in a booger joke or two.

I enjoy reading these articles, if they are done well. But this kind of
humor seems to work best for material that is meant to be read once.

We are an easily amused bunch.
