I don't think I would call my plans "really detailed." I block out times for
initial definition of requirements, research, drafts, reviews/updates, printing,
etc., but I don't break things down any smaller than that. From my point
of view the most important things that planning does for me is to make my
requirements and commitments visible to others, particularly in the area of
reviewer turnaround time, and to reinforce in the minds of the developers
the fact that my documents have to go through various safety and compliance
reviews that their SW never seems to have to. I generally update my plan
on a weekly or semi-weekly basis. As for the last comment, if you don't have
an idea of where you expect to be at any given point, how can you ever tell
anyone that you're making progress?
