TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
To the theory section, I would add some/all of the following:
* project management - trust me, you need this individually
* printing technologies - hard and soft copy
* fonts technology - hard and soft copy
* graphics technology - hard and soft copy
* color technology - hard and soft copy
* network technology - doesn't need to be deep, but you have to understand
mapping folders, etc.
* programming - the concepts are invaluable, even if you are not documenting
software.
To the tools section, I would add:
* at least 1 illustration tool
* at least 1 graphics tool
* your computer - it is NOT assumed that because you are writers that you
understand computers. Too many of us don't understand how or why they work
and it scares me.
* Windows - same as above
* Acrobat, including Distiller
I am sure there is more, but that is what I can think of with little coffee.
Notice all of my ideas are about being more technical, which, I think, your
list is short on. But I also need more coffee.

Subject: Skills matrix
OK, theory time people!
I've been asked to contribute to our a company wide skills matrix. Each area
will have it's own matrix with one being 'general' attributes such as time
planning, business awareness etc etc. Each 'skill' is broken into two levels
(or three if required).
So (and this is probably more of a check) what should I put down for
TechComms?
So far I have (and yes it COULD be a huge list, but we've been told to stick
to main areas):

Planning Content
Writing
Illustrating
Reviewing
Editing
Production

Information Design

My main concern is missing something obvious and making a rod for our backs
later on (not sure how this matrix is going to be used, just that it MUST
been done... ho hum)
