Re: Intransitive triggering
But if a procedure runs automatically each
time a particular parameter is reset, is it
reasonable to say that "the procedure will trigger"
upon parameter reset, or must we say that the
procedure "will be triggered"?
Has anyone seen the intransitive use? That is, has
anyone seen "trigger" used to mean "be triggered"?
I cannot remember ever having seen "to trigger" be sued intransitively. I also would advise against using it in this way.
If you write "the procedure is triggered", it is immediately clear that some external event causes it to be executed. If you write, on the other hand, "the procedure triggers", many readers (including myself) will ask "triggers what?". This is exacerbated by the fact that prcedures can, in fact, trigger other entities, e.g., other procedures.
In the interest of clarity and efficiency (of reading), it seems therefore much better to use trigger transitively.
