Sean & Sean,

You don't use autonumbering if you want numbering to be
reliable. You set up fields -- one for starting at one,
and one for continuing -- just like you create separate
styles in Frame.

First, create an unnumbered hanging indent style for
your paragraph.
Then define the following fields (Insert > Field)
{ SEQ step1 \* Arabic \r 1 \*MERGEFORMAT } -- save this as
an autotext entry
named 1
(insert > autotext > new )

{ SEQ step1 \* Arabic \n \*MERGEFORMAT }-- save this as
an autotext entry
named 2

using the step para style, type 1, press F3, type the step,
press return

*type 2, press F3, type the step, press return
repeat from *
