I'd include them. As an employer, I want to see what the candidate has to offer. I'm able to make the mental leap between procedures for controlling a dog to procedures for configuring software, for example. If your writing is good, I can teach you the techniques and technology. It also shows me that writing is part of your life, not just your "job". And that you actually have a life, and compassion, and a bunch of other good qualities that are implied by your volunteer work.

Hi all,

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have written a couple of training
pieces. I'm debating whether to include them once I finally get around to
creating a portfolio. One the one hand, they address complicated issues.
(Controlling an aggressive dog, for example.) I did a great deal of research
and worked very hard on these docs. I'm very proud of them. On the other, I
don't know if it would seem a bit flaky. Any thoughts?
