I don't think that anyone who works on an Open Source project believes that
it is without cost. 

The difference is that Linux has traditionally been based around the idea of
a "gift culture". Instead of placing the highest importance upon monetary
returns for time spent, people working on Open Source projects find reward
in giving their work away. Eric S. Raymond has explored this idea in
"Homesteading the Noosphere." 

I think it just comes down to the fact that different people find different
things important; not everyone covets money as the primary aim of work. 



I won't argue that the open source community isn't alive and well. However I
believe that the biggest supporters of the movement delude themselves when
they
think it is without cost.
