If you are technically inclined, you can use DocBook XML as the format
for your single-source system, and create the various output media using
the Modular Docbook Stylesheets from www.sourceforge.net.  That
combination will create PDF, HTMLHelp, XHTML (the base for Microsoft
eBooks), HTML, and JavaHelp.  It also offers a fine degree of control
over "profiling," sometimes known as conditional documents.  It has the
additional benefit of being free.

Taking the time to learn to use the XML tools will tend to make you more
marketable as a technical writer, both now and especially in the future
as XML becomes the data storage format of choice.
