I think dead trees are a red herring.

I'd bet more trees are killed because of online-only docs than included
printed documentation. That's because, I see and expect folks to print
page ranges and/or the entire doc over and over again as needed, if it's
supplied online, whereas I see and expect folks to be less eager to
print if a printed bound book is included.
