Maybe you have a point. But this is a tech writing company we're talking about, doing what we all do for a living. This is NOT a company whose services we as tech writers might employ

It is not? I don't know - if I had to create online help from a Word manual and they might do it for $30 a pop, I would certainly look into it. After all, format conversion is a purely mechnical aspect of writing and not where a tech writer adds value. We don't create films ourselves (Most of us), so why shouldn't we look into farming out conversion?
