I'd add a couple of thoughts.
* It depends also on where you live. The high end salaries in Phoenix AZ are
probably near the middle of the pack for salaries here in Boston. But if I
was in Phoenix, I'd get more for my money. If Writer A in Phoenix makes $50K
and has a new three-bedroom house and a new car while Writer B in Boston
makes $75K but on that can only afford a one-bedroom apartment and a ten
year old rustbucket...the bigger bucks really don't matter. It isn't just
the quantity, it's the quality of the dollar.
* It depends on how the jobs last. 18 months ago, in this region, I'd have
said that telecom jobs pay the most. If our Writer B was earning $75K in
2001, but got laid off and earned nothing in 2002...that puts Writer B
behind Writer A who "only" earned $50K but has worked steady both years. It
doesn't matter how high the salary was, all pink slips pay the same.
