IME, you'll want a Mac for the DTP and a windows machine for the multimedia. Mac is certainly the standard for the DTP set, while most of the multimedia developers I know are working in Windows.
I suggest digging around the Internet for a bargain computer dealer like http://www.cyberpowerpc.com for your IBM and then taking full advantage of his new student status to obtain academic pricing for software/ Mac hardware. I never needed to purchase a mac so I'm not sure if discount resllers exists for them as well, I've never looked into it.
