I would have agreed with you that using the name of the company as it
was when you left was the right choice. But I am in the middle of
editing a 300-page book by a resume expert, who says that you should use
*today's* name for the company. "Use the name that an employer would
hear when the company phone is answered." She says to put a small
explanation in the resume if you feel it's needed.
The author says you need to think about this from the perspective of the
resume reader who doesn't necessarily remember the way things were
before a change occurred. Especially if it has been some time since the
merger or buyout, you need to provide a company name under which
information about your work will be available. In your case, it's not
likely anyone will call the company, but if you use the old name from 16
years ago, employers may not have ever even heard of it.
