Dick Margulis' reply was excellent. When I was a programmer back in the
early 80s, the only interpretation of Julian date that I knew of was a
2-digit year followed by a 3-digit number for the day. It was a
convention our entire office used. My mother worked in the business
office of a department store, and also used the phrase in that sense. I
have only recently (i.e., in the last 6 months) heard it used in other
ways. There are a few possibilities: (a) I'm an old dog and can't learn
new tricks, (b) the new dogs have forgotten what the old dogs knew, or
(c) I was hanging around with the wrong packs. I suspect that if your
audience is Microsoft programmers, then they would need a different term
to refer to 02289 (today, in Julian format).
