Easy...one day, I was putting my sig together at a new gig and I said to
myself..."Self....today you are a Senior technical writer", there was no
additional money, but it felt due.

How did I base that criteria?

It happened to me when I walked alone into a gig at Western Union and was
given the mandate to create a 460 page user/admin manual for distribution to
50,000 Money Centers around the world and all I had to start with was a
blank FrameMaker page, no predefined format or styles, developers in Belgium
(I was in NJ), and a early-beta application that crashed...alot.

The exam? I delivered it on time.

If someone needs to tell you how to deal with the details, formats, job
requirements, and all the other details which surround doing your job, you
are not a senior level.

If, OTOH, your general job scope is "The deadline is X date. Do whatever you
have to do to give me a miracle by then and let me know if you have any
problems.", then you be a senior technical writer.
