TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Here is what I was told in order to get an understanding of the financial industry:
1. Read the Wall St. Journal
2. Obtain and use the excellent financial terminology dictionary
published by the Wall Street Journal
3. Read Money, Forbes, Fortune, etc.
4. Hang out with the people
5. Get Barron's business terms dictionary and/or
Barron's Dictionary of Financial and Investment Terms
6. Get Schaum's Outlines at a college or other bookstore. There's probably one on financial accounting
7. Get the various certification materials with texts and references available through industry groups
8. Look for college textbooks on the subject
9. Read a book called "The Bankers." While not a technical or reference book, it gives me a nice feel for how banks and transaction processing systems work. It might be a little outdated now.
10. Check out the American Bankers Association at www.aba.com to see
about purchasing their Glossary of Fiduciary Terms
