I just downloaded a patch and it was relatively painless (only three reboots).
For anyone who may not be aware of it, there is a Windows Update tool that is accessible from Internet Explorer (Tools > Windows Update). It determines what patches you need and lets you download and install them. One warning: After downloading a patch, installing it, and (if required) rebooting, you should always go back and invoke the tool one more time to see if there is another critical update. Sometimes one becomes accessibly only after the previous one is installed.
