I would recommend an article about networking groups. You mention
networking and research in general, but networking groups can make a useful
contribution to all phases of the job search.
When I was looking for work, I attended a group in the Boston area called
WIND (Wednesday Is Networking Day). I can't recommend it strongly enough.
WIND now has three groups going in the area on different days.
In addition to networking, I had lots of help developing my resume and
practicing interviewing skills, not mention plenty of motivational and
moral support. Attending the roup was really effective for me.
