This is apparently version dependent:

In Word 2002 (Office XP), do this:

Create an empty paragraph. Create a new style based on None, fix it up
with whatever attributes you want. Add to template. With cursor in that
paragraph, and your styles pane open, pull down the menu from the
"unclean" style and choose Update to match selection. Bingo.
