IMO, deep linking is the hypertext equivalent of putting a page number when citing a book. It's also the practice that is in the best interests of the reader. Linking to the homepage of some megalithic Web site is practically worthless if you are trying to refer your readers to a specific bit of information. It's the online equivalent of saying that a quote comes from somewhere in War and Peace and making your readers look through the entire book to find it.

I recently saw an article in the NY Tiimes about a lawsuit in which some
major website (like cnn.com or one of those - don't hold me to that link)
sought to prohibit "deep linking," the practice of linking to a page other
than the home page of a site, thus bypassing the popup ads and going
directly to content.
