The above is a fine example of "reductio ad absurdum", with nasty
implications to boot.
If you have a family, you have an obligation to spend time with them,
among other things. If you have a job, you have an obligation to fulfill
the requirements of your contract with your employer, among other things.
Sometimes those obligations create conflicting demands on your time. This
in turn creates conflict which must be resolved through time management,
etc.
If you say the job always comes first, are you saying that by extension
single parents should not work? And in couples, one parent should stay
home? If the job comes first then do you skip your child's birthday to
meet a deadline? Do you skip their wedding?
The blanket statement that one is "core" and the other "must come in
second", is absurd.
Life, professional or private, just isn't that simple.
