The bottom line is that you are employed to do a job, and your
employment is based on a number of hours. Everybody pulls OT in crunch
time, that is understood. But, if the work of a non-font-fondling,
competent, content-oriented, non-goof-off technical writer consistently
includes 20-40 hours of overtime, then the employer is being abusive.
The employer needs to manage projects better, hire more writers, and/or
compensate the employee for the overtime. Period.
Owners of companies have a different perspective, and different rewards.
Employees, however, do not sell themselves to an employer for 60, 80,
168 hours per week for a 40-hour paycheck. Contrary to what some
believe, getting a salaried job does not give your employer the right
and should not expect your employer to believe they own you every hour
of every day.
The job is technical writing for a set (minimum or average) number of
hours. The job is not technical writing until the employer says you can
go home.
But, many employers are abusing their employees, by ratcheting up the
overtime without compensation, laying off employees and shoving 20-40
hours of regular overtime on remaining employees.
I am amazed at the position some have taken on this.
