Any attempt to make Word emulate side heads is a kluge. That's plain and
simple. Generating a table and masking the grid lines is one way, but it
certainly doesn't work all that well. I re-worked styles for subheadings
and Body Text so that a document appears to have side heads, but that
involves some effort, too.

Word does some things well; others, it either doesn't do or doesn't do
them well. After all, it's not really a DTP application, is it?
