I use Frame's side-head feature to place captions in the left margin
(information mapping style). I need to create a similar template in MS
Word. Previously, I have had to use invisible tables in order to
imitate the look I am able to do in Frame. I don't want to use tables
this time around. It created a lot of headaches that I want to avoid.
So I'm hoping that Word 2000 has a side-head feature.
I've modified the styles for Heading 3 and Heading 4 to simulate the
side heads that Frame so easily manages.
First, I set the Paragraph setting for Body Text to have a Left
Indentation of 1.5".
I pulled the right margin for Heading 3 and Heading 4 across to a point
1.38" from the left margin. Then, I set these characteristics for
Heading 3:
Heading 3:
Properties--Style for following paragraph: Body Text
Paragraph--Spacing 6pt before/after; single-spaced
Frame--Size-->Width: Exactly At: 1.38";
Horizontal-->Position: Left Relative to: Margin Distance
from
text: 0.13"
Vertical-->Position: 0" Relative to: Paragraph Distance
from
text: 0.13"
Move with text (set)
Lock anchor (not set)
For Heading 4, I changed the Font setting to a different color and, in
the Paragraph setting, I changed this style to right-justify instead of
left-justify (for Heading 3).
Word is tricky; these work for me but they have not worked in all
documents. Watch the text-wrapping of the previous and next paragraphs;
sometimes, I need to insert a blank line between so that wrapping works
"normally."
If you'd like, I'll send you a copy of a template I created using these
styles.
Good luck.
