TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Let me try. Dick's original puzzle was (paraphrased):
If I reply off-list, I sometimes get an offended response.
If I reply on-list, I sometimes get an offended response.
Am I supposed to know in advance who will be offended an off-list reply and
who won't? How?
As far as I can tell, at least half the replies to this post addressed
something other than what he asked. It was an essentially rhetorical
question, accompanied by what I saw as a puzzled look and some head
scratching. And my answer is no, Dick, you're not supposed to know in
advance. I can't explain it either :)
