I've always heard the same story in the form of a
Jewish joke about a sign that says "Fresh fish for
sale here today." The punchline comes when the
sign is reduced to the single word "Fish" and the
next customer who happens by says "Why bother writing
'Fish'? Everyone can smell your fish from a block
away."

Maybe there's also a version from India...
