I may be reading too much into this situation, but it sounds like you should
change the behavior of the form instead. I think expected behavior would be
that the UPDATE button is enabled when a person enters text into the text
field, not when they leave it.

If the form behaves like you expect it to, documenting it gets much easier.
I understand that you might not be able to change the form, but it sounds
like the most sensible approach to me. Or I just don't get it (which is very
possible).
