I have a way of irritating some people--especially those who don't actually read what I write. That's not a surprise and not what I'm writing about at the moment, however.

The question I have relates to corresponding with such individuals. One participant in this list told me, "Never write to me off-list again, and I think you know why." Well, I never wrote to that person again, on or off-list; but I still don't know why. Others have said, in essence, "How dare you respond to me on-list! And I think you know why."

So here's my question. And I hope all those who have decided to hate me for things I never said take this opportunity to reply to me, either on- or off-list: Is there any way to determine a priori whether it is better to disagree with you in private or in public? Is there a general rule of netiquette that everyone but me knows about? Or should I just resolve to agree with what everyone says, regardless of the logical impossibility of doing so, and be done with it?
