be some connection between the "once vs. when" thread (and similar
threads) and the thread about low pay and difficulty finding a job
in the current market."

Congratulations, you have given offense. Someone's asking a simple grammar,
spelling, etc., question on this list does not mean that that is what they
base their value as a technical communicator on. It means that they have a
question and want our opinions. Personally, as a technical writer/editor, I
find those questions and resulting threads much more valuable to my job than
this drivel about pay and joblessness.
