Rachel is: "currently beginning a three month process of preparing myself to heavily campaign for my job."

Here are some suggestions:

- Try to get some feedback from the support group on how your documentation has (hopefully) reduced their workload or how you have taken support issues and created instructions that preclude support calls.

- Stay in touch and up to date while you are out of the office.

- When we finish products, we put together a summary of the good and bad things that happened during the development and production of the product ("postmortem feedback"). If you do something similar, use some of the collected comments to explain how the doc processes will improve in the future.

I don't think that what you are doing will save your job.
- Creating a portfolio - your portfolio is the work you have already done. Yes, do it so you have it for job-hunting, but you should not have to put one together for your current job.
- Collecting "thank-yous" and "good jobs" will look self-serving
- Style guide for the department - this is something you should do anyway and doesn't necessarily make you look outstanding. Besides, most non-doc professionals don't appreciate the work that goes into such a beast.
