I guess I'm confused as to why this is a bad practice for the company.
Assuming equal (or similar) experience and knowledge, why NOT try to pay the
least possible? Not to pit one employee (or applicant) against another, but
to reduce corporate costs, etc. If a tw is truly happy in what he/she is
doing for the company, and assuming the pay attends to his/her needs, who
does it really hurt?

Just as I am free to hold my services, experience, knowledge, etc. out to
the highest bidder if I want, so too companies should be (and do) try to
reduce cost by lowering salaries wherever possible. As an applicant, I'm
free to accept or reject whatever offer comes my way.

One place I worked for low-balled every applicant.
Some were smart enough and in demand enough to get
what they asked for. Others grabbed what was offered.
The result? Over $40k difference in salary among
people at the same status level and same position.
Since salary was kept classified, the company got away
with it. It didn't come out until after a large
layoff, and by that time the point was moot.

Think about that. I doubt it was the only place like this.
