Re: Back to the Dark Ages.
Well, if you can convince the trolls in the IT office to cut their own throats (Windows equals lots of need for lots of personnel) then you can probably get Linux.
Using LInux may increase stability and security, but it's not magic. Given that most office workers (including, I'm afraid, many tech-writers) have no wish to learn how to setup a network or a firewall, the need for sysadmins isn't going to disappear. Besides, many of the problems that sysadmins juggle have to do with the size and the complexity of the network, not just the operating system. What Linux does offer is some more breathing room, so that the sysadmins aren't completely overworked.
(I suspect that you may know this, but I wanted to mention it for those who don't. As much as I'm an advocate for GNU/Linux, I wouldn't want people to have unrealistic expectations of it).
Don't count on it. Most IT professionals (note that I must caveat it as to include ONLY my personal exposure to IT professionals) are loath to learn anything new, admit they don't know, or to experiment in new technologies to solve a problem.I dunno. In my experience, it's usually the IT professionals who push for Linux (okay, I'm weird). I've even seen articles about how to introduce Linux into the work place without the bosses knowing - seriously.
