My background was in sales. That worked well because I could speak to
the sales and marketing people in their language. I also knew, from
that background, that the response must be in a feature-benefit
approach.
Too many techies would give me stuff along the lines of "Our stuff is
GREAT...it does 400 million goomiesquats per second!"
I'd turn around and ask them "Is that good?" After enough of this,
they understood that their correct response was" "Our stuff does 400
million goomiesquats per second, which accordoing to the benchmarks
published by the Goomie Alliance, allows you to perform 34% more
goomies per shift than any current product on the market."
I always though proposal writing was the purest form of technical
writing as it had to not only be correct and accurate, but had to
make the reader know WHY something was done the way it was.
