Well, my main reason is probably already apparent. I tend to get behind
in my reading of the digests, and so don't want to (a) say something
that's already been said, and/or (b) continue a thread that Eric has
officially shut down.

Actually, I guess I'm only a semi-lurker, because those two
considerations only make me hesitant to REPLY to other postings. I
figure that if I START a new thread, I'm less likely to commit either
offense.
