Michael Webster wonders: <<Is there any way, beyond the obvious, to flush
out unwanted/ unused styles from a template created using Word 97.>>

What's "obvious" in the context of Word? <g> The good news is that you can
choose to display only the styles that are currently in use in the template
by opening the Format menu, choosing Styles, and at the bottom (under
"List"), selecting "styles in use" to replace the default "all styles". In
the same dialog box, you can also select and delete any styles you don't
want to use. The bad news is that for certain built-in styles (e.g., Heading
1), Word won't let you delete them.

One caution: Before deleting a style, make sure it's not used as the basis
for other styles. If you delete such a style, all styles defined based on it
may lose some or all of their properties. (Haven't checked the details of
this, but it seems a likely side-effect. Anyone with direct experience care
to comment?)
