My current employer was taken aback when I asked if I would be required to take writing/editing test during a pre-interview telephone conversation. I was only the second tech writer they'd hired. The first had no professional writing experience and fell into the job as it was the only position open to her after a corporate merger.

This is the only technical writer job I've ever held; but a writing/editing test, was arequire for every other writing/editing (mostly journalism) job, I've applied or interviewed for.
