On Linux (I would presume to speak for the dozens of other UNIX types and clones), you can usually use the Windows versions of fonts. However, for some reason I haven't been able to track down, some fonts simply don't work. There seems a greater than normal chance that dingbat sets won't work, but some completely normal fonts don't, either. I'm not sure whether the fault lies in the font server (the software that makes the fonts available), or the x-server (the software that provides the graphical capacity), or in some obscure interaction between the font server, the x-server, and the fonts themselves.
