I think the printing situation is more likely a problem with your printer's buffer, not RAM. I can work on a big doc at home with no trouble, but can only print it out in 10 page increments. At work, the same doc is no problem. (It doesn't crash the computer in either location.)

No, I have 512Mb of RAM and I still manage to make Word crash. I suppose
that this problem is relative to the size of the document, because Word
feels the need to write everything to RAM when printing. I can't print my
document because my PC is limited to 512Mb of RAM and Word needs more than
that when printing. I usually print the document in 50 page increments, or
convert to PDF to avoid the problem.
