Anecdote: When I lived in Paris I had a horrendous commute. One dark and stormy evening, snow caused gridlock and people who
left work at 5pm got home at midnight. Something had to be done.

Fact: I arranged to work from home Wednesdays. For me, an unexpected productivity gain was that the change of context helped me
work harder AND smarter. For four days a week I was at the office, interacting with (and being distracted by) my colleagues.
But one day a week I was able to work on different projects which required longer periods of concentration, and a different
working style. At that job, four and one was ideal. It depends on the type of work you're doing.

Opinion: If your work requires collaboration, there's no substitute for direct contact with others. Let me rephrase that:
email, phone, etc. are substitutes, but they're not as good.
