TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Bryan Westbrook reported: <<I am essentially a lone writer even though I
work for a large corporation. The company has other writers, even writing
teams, but in my day-to-day work I never interact with any of them and have
only actually met one of them, and, as I said in that other thread, that was
through STC... I was wondering if are there many others in similar
situations?>>
There are enough people in similar situations that STC formed a special
interest group called "The LoneWriter SIG". I've been in a similar situation
when I worked at a federal research center as the only editor, and it can
feel very isolating. You mentioned that you've never met any of these
people, and that's kind of a shame; there's nothing like a support group to
help you through those occasional crises and to help you learn things you
never much thought about. Witness techwr-l, for instance.
I'd recommend that you spend some time looking up your colleagues and
getting to know each other. No need to form a union or split off into your
own department or anything drastic: just get together and sound each other
out on life at AMD. Who knows what good things could come out of this?
