I was in this same situation during a former contract. You don't get a many
larger companies in these parts than Safeco, but I was hired to do a
specific writing job.

The nice thing about my contract was that no one in my group understood what
I was doing, and I didn't understand what they were doing (I didn't have to
-- I was simply creating an educational website for insurance agents). So,
I was never perceived as a threat ("Another contractor trying to take over
my job..."), and I was able to do whatever I wanted with the website (no one
ever said, "It's always been done this way...").

Ah, the good old days!
