The matter has nothing to do with copyright. It might be a trademark issue, but not a copyright one.

It's a matter of complying with copyright law. MS has a vested interest in
preventing the mark "Excel' from becomming public domain. Hence the
insistance of use of the prefix "Microsoft," when referring to Excel.
